Admissions

Places at the school are normally available to children who live in the catchment area of Sawtry, Coppingford, Glatton, Buckworth and Upton. Our admission limit is 75 children in each year and our overall school limit is 300 children.

The Local Authority (LA), as the admission authority, has the responsibility, in consultation with governors, for determining admissions policy and criteria.

The admissions criteria will operate in the following priority order:

  1. Children with a statement of special educational need which names the school or for whom this is the only school that can meet their long-term medical needs.
  2. Children who live in the catchment area, attend the partner infant school and who have a sibling at the school (or the partner infant school) at the time of admission.
  3. Children who live in the catchment area who have a sibling at the school (or the partner infant school) at the time of admission.
  4. Children who live in the catchment area and who attend the partner infant school
  5. Children living in the catchment area.
  6. Children who live outside the catchment area, but attend the partner infant school and have a sibling at the school (or the partner infant school) at the time of admission.
  7. Children who live outside the catchment area, but have a sibling at the school (or the partner infant school) at the time of admission.
  8. Children who live outside the catchment area, but who attend the partner infant school.
  9. Children who live outside the catchment area and have been unable to gain a place at their catchment area school because of oversubscription.
  10. Children who live outside the catchment area, but nearest the school according to the shortest available, safe, walking route.

In cases of equal merit in both sets of criteria, priority will go first to children who are looked after and then to children living nearest to the school.

If there is no alternative school within statutory walking distance by a safe route then the LA would consider whether there was a case for reviewing the school's capacity (which may result in the provision of additional accommodation), or providing transport to another school.

Transport to school

Parents are responsible for their child's journey to and from school. The Local Authority will provide transport if the child's home is more than 2 miles away from the school by the shortest available safe walking route or less if the Local Authority assess the route to be unsafe.

Appeals

The Local Authority will allocate places to schools and organise parental appeals when preferences cannot be met.

If a parent is refused admission of their child owing to the school having reached its published admissions limit and capacity, the parent has the right of appeal to an independent appeals committee. The appeals committee can allow a place for a child even if the school is full, if the committee believes that the child's or family's case is sufficiently strong.

Parents seeking further advice on school admissions should consult the Admissions Officer at the education office, 01223 717916.

Our admission form requests basic information, medical information and a list of contact telephone numbers should illness or accident occur during the day. We also need to view the child's birth certificate at the time of registration - this does not apply to children who transfer from the Infant School. We also request that parents and children sign the Home-School Agreement at the time of admission to the school.

We expect parents to keep us informed of any changes in address, telephone or contact arrangements.

We have close links with the adjoining Infant School and children transfer to us at the end of Key Stage 1. Parents of children transferring to the school are invited to visit the school during the Summer Term. This usually coincides with a visit by the children to meet their teachers for the coming year.

Parents are provided with information on the choices for secondary education during the children's final year at this school. Our pupils normally transfer to Sawtry Community College and there is opportunity during their final year for visits to the College and to meet with tutors.

Parents moving into the area are welcome to visit the school.
